Whatever You Do, Do It Well!
On June 16, 1775, George Washington was appointed commander in chief of the Continental Army by the Second Continental Congress. That same day, the Congress authorized the creation of the post of chief engineer for the army, in anticipation of upcoming battles with British forces. The engineers’ work building fortifications, surveying terrain, and clearing roads during the war proved so valuable to the Revolutionary forces that the Congress resolved to form a permanent Army Corps of Engineers.1
“You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its flavor, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled on by people. You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill cannot be hidden. People do not light a lamp and put it under a basket but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before people, so that they can see your good deeds and give honor to your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:13-16; NET)
Give Him 15 minutes in prayer:
Look at how the Army Corps of Engineers came about. The army didn’t just need soldiers, it needed support in practical ways. All of you with practical gifts REJOICE! God made you engineers and architects, scientists and lawyers and administrators! Your gifts are important!
Repent if you have thought your practical gifts were of value to God. Repent if you just wanted God to hurry up and put you “in ministry” or on the mission field. NO! You are needed right where you are – all through every arena of influence in America!
The Lord would have us be lights in the darkness and salt to make men thirsty. We can’t do that inside the walls of our church buildings. We have to get out among the rest of humanity day by day. Ask the Lord to use all of the gifts He created you with in order to spread His Kingdom message!
A prayer you can pray:
Father, thank you that You created many of us with very practical gifts. You have a perfect place for us – an important place! Our nation needs our gifts! Society needs our gifts! Our families need our gifts! I worship You with my gift as I go to work today. Make me the brightest light and the saltiest salt. Draw men to God through my life’s work. Forgive me when I have discounted who I am and what I’m doing for a living. I am needed. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.
Today’s decree:
Every gift God put within us has tremendous value and we have a role to play to make our nation great and to expand His Kingdom!
